Competing for SAMSUNG Solve for Tomorrow Contest’s $2 Million: 51 Schools Named Nationwide

SAMSUNG reveals the 51 state winners for the Solve for Tomorrow Contest who will have the chance to move to the next leg of the competition. All teams will have a chance at the $2 million total worth of prizes.  

SAMSUNG finally named the 51 schools across the country, who will have the chance to participate in the Solve for Tomorrow Contest, an initiative that started in order to raise awareness and enthusiasm for STEM or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math through challenging both teachers and students of different schools and their solving ability to tackle important issues of the society.  

Created in 2010, SAMSUNG Solve for Tomorrow Contest was created in order to address and fill in the gap in the classrooms across the country and at the same time, engage students to hands-on STEM learning. In total, SAMSUNG has already invested beyond $17 million for STEM education across the country.

Receiving $20,000 in technology, one school from the District of Columbia and from each state will receive the following, which will help them complete the next step of the competition:

  • Samsung GALAXY Camera™ 2
  • ATIV Book 9 laptop
  • Adobe Elements software

The winning schools from each state were chosen out of the 3,100 teachers. They were chosen based on their STEM skills and how they are able to use them to address important issues in their community. Some of these issues include:

  • Water pollution
  • Air quality
  • Public health epidemics

The teachers were required to submit a lesson plan and provide illustrations on how they will operate with their ideas.

The 51 winners moved to the next phase, which is the part where they get to bring their ideas to life. They made a video featuring their projects and operating on their ideas. And on February, 15 teams would move to the national finals.

In the national finals, the 15 teams faced a live panel of judges and present their projects. This took place in March. And among those 15 teams, 5 teams were named as national grand prize winners. They were be chosen by the following adjudicators:

  • A panel of judges
  • Samsung employees
  • Public online voters

Specific organizations were given special awards focusing on the topic or issue chosen by the winners. These are:

  • DIRECTV: Math
  • National Environmental Education Foundation: Environmental Innovation
  • Digital Promise: Civic Engagement

And with approximately $2 million worth of prizes, these prizes were be presented by the following organizations:

  • Samsung
  • Adobe
  • DIRECTV
  • Fortune
  • PBS TeacherLine
  • National Environmental Education Foundation
  • Digital Promise

PBS TeacherLine also offered each teacher a professional development class.

Samsung Electronics North America Corporate Citizenship director Ann Woo said, "We believe that applying science, technology, engineering and math to real-world challenges can be a powerful tool to engage youth in STEM subjects.
