Avaya formally introduces the Avaya Engagement Development Platform which will be broadcasted in the Avaya Podcast Network. Hosted by Mark J. Fletcher, learn more about the new platform in the broadcast.

December 16, 2014- live at Avaya Engages Silicon Valley and broadcasted in Avaya Podcast Network, Avaya Engagement Development Platform was formally introduced to the market. With host Mark J. Fletcher, ENP, Chief Architect for Worldwide Public Safety Solutions at Avaya, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Engagement Solutions Gary Barnett discussed the exciting features that comes with AEDP and what customers should anticipate in this revolutionizing platform.

Barnett believes that the event introducing the Avaya Engagement Development Platform does not only tackle the specifics of the product, but also the direction, where the company and the industry is heading to. And so far, both are heading towards open standards and opening up the application development process.

Being virtually impossible before because the customized applications offered in the market are enterprise-specific, it is now the future of the industry. With a strong platform with open standards and basic tools, developers all over the world are getting more and more excited because of the possible communication applications they can come up with, according to Barnett.

Fletch focused on how simple, CTI, the command language used, is. Fletch said that it’s as simple as picking up the phone, dialing a number, and answering the phone. This goes the same way with the multimedia options, voice and video technology, as well as instant messaging.

Barnett compared Avaya Engagement Development Platform to LEGO blocks. The best thing about the platform is that all the capabilities and tools can be put together in varied ways, producing unique and quirky applications. And it is Avaya’s job to provide the developers with unique and varied software LEGO blocks they could use and add value to. Visit our store and discover amazing products Avaya can offer you.

Barnett said, “Now I get it. I can take something like attribute-based routing, or I can take context, I can take speech analytics, I can take voice video, SMS, and I can snap those together in unique ways that will solve my particular problem. Nothing like this is available in the industry, up until Avaya.”

When Fletch asked Barnett about some cases where the Avaya Engagement Development Platform have been useful, Barnett provided two.

The first one was a case of Dynamic Teaming. While it has already been an issue before, it involves a longer process of that take up lots of time. The process is consisted of:

  • Identifying who to gather together
  • Creating a meeting
  • Sending invites

The app created on the other hand, works in just a matter of few minutes. From figuring out the people who have the matching attributes, to forming a video conference, then to bringing the people in—all of those processes can be completed in few minutes.

Different industries which use dynamic teaming, like city governments, communication companies, healthcare and education, can benefit from this application big time.

This is highly applicable and beneficial to public safety, in particular. Forming dynamic teams in disasters is critical and should be handled with utmost care. If an accident occurs, you may want to pull together people with specific attributes who will be able to work more effectively in the situation. This is where the app comes in handy.

“Engaging them quickly does not only enhance robustness but can even be lifesaving.” Said Barnett.

The second case was a problem of a certain university regarding its slow response and action strategy, whenever elevator incidents happen in the campus. After being advised with some state law, the university didn’t know what to do and how to resolve it. Avaya Engagement Development Platform resolved their problem.

In a matter of days, an application was created, which was capable of supporting stable route calls, identifying who were in the elevator and providing communication system in place. From zero analytics, they now know every incident that happens with the use of the app. In fact, Barnett said that the university desires to expand their use of the application to all their smart buildings, including their HVAC systems. A simple elevator problem led to the overall improvement in the university’s system.

Fletch said that the normal technology today has been going at it for decades using WebRTC interface, HTML5 and the BYOD stuff in a client-less environment, which was seconded by Barnett.

Barnett also said that mobility is a factor that always brings about change and is also one of the drivers which led to the creation of the Avaya Engagement Development Platform. And though it is mobility that helped push the industry forward, it also increased the demands of new cases. Know more about the platform in this website.

The interview however ended in a happy note with how the platform was really created. Barnett said, “It is being at the right place at the right time. Listening to our customers and partners, becoming much more use-case driver and then delivering exactly what they needed.”
